portion control are a british electronic and industrial band formed in london in 1980 - they are one of
the most famous harder edged obscure electronic music acts in the world and have been honoured and
name checked by the likes of depeche mode, skinny puppy, front line assembly, nin & orbital
they have had a number or releases on in phaze, illuminated and dead mans curve, including
i staggered mentally (1982), as raw an electronic album as you could possibly find - an urban-industrial
backing track of creaking metal, maudlin drones, primitive beats and alienating analogue flickers. It is also
considered the first album to feature the legendary roland bass line tb-303 this was followed by the chris
cater produced hit the pulse where the sound becomes more refined and sophisticated, although still
completely out on a ledge for its time.
step forward (1984) and psycho-bod saves the world (1986) - an amalgamation of purist industrial music, shaped into songs rather than atmospheres – containing their most recognised works combining highly effective thick analogue sequencing into, often catchy song structures on psycho-bod saves the world, you can see the clear influence portion control had on the evolving industrial scene– with its reams of multi-layered film samples and moody soundscapes. the album embraces fluid songwriting ethics, with basslines sequencing and the odd sampled guitar powering the songs forward.
in 1987 portion control dissapeared and after a 17 year break resumed activities with the release`of wellcome (2004) a huge genre spanning body of works split across 2 cd’s this was followed by an ep titled stansted (2005) and archive (2006) a boxed set of 5 cd’s containing all the vinyl released. the newest critically acclaimed release filthy white guy (2006) adheres to their strong song based formula, with synthetic cohesive structures and gritty polymorphic rhythms incorporated alongside the trademark analogue sequencing - lending an added depth, power, energy and strength to the hard-sound aesthetics and the anguished, brooding Piavani vocals.
portion control are highly active again and arguably more relevant and powerful than ever more information:
